Development of the Central Area West and East of the Capitol-Washington D.C.

Description

NCPPC illustrated its plan for central Washington.

This vision, one of the federal government’s most intensive concepts for the area (e.g., see 1952 map), stemmed from NCPPC’s establishment as the national capital’s planning agency (see 1926 NCPPC act). NCPPC periodically released updated monographs as development and planning evolved (see 1928 Continuity of Planning and 1929 East of the Capitol).

NCPPC’s1940s monographs reflected an articulation of the growing federal presence and national ambitions within the broader National Capital Region. The general concept and some major elements advanced (e.g., see 1957 D.C. Stadium Act). But the expansive vision faced both geopolitical and everyday roadblocks e.g., wartime budgets and street trees (see 1938 Evening Star article).

NCPC carried earlier central area planning forward in Extending the Legacy: Planning American's Capital for the 21st Century, Monumental Core Framework Plan, SW Ecodistrict Plan: A Vision for a More Sustainable Future, and ongoing Monumental Core Projects (see webpage).
